DEATH OF JAMES WALL, 103.
Resident of Waterbury Believed to be Oldest Man in State.
James Wall supposed to be the oldest
man in Connecticut, died at his home in Waterbury yesterday, aged
103. He was born in Ireland, in 1807. As a child he
heard the news of Waterloo, and only a few days before his death he
told the story of the excitement which ran through Ireland when the
news came of Napoleon's death. HE came to this country in
1842. In 1861, although 55 years old, he enlisted in the 9th
Connecticut regiment, the "Fighting ninth," and served through the
civil war. He never wore spectacles, and could hear perfectly.
Mr. Wall attributed his longevity and good health to his
use of tobacco from boyhood, temperate use of liquors and hard work. |
