CERRO GORDO (SEHR uh GOR
do, SEHR uh GOR duh, SEHR o GOR duh). Piatt,
Village (1873) eight miles east of Decatur,
Formerly known as Griswald, named for the
president of Great Western Railroad, which
established a station in the early 1840s.
Renamed about 1854 for the Cerro Gordo post
office, itself named in commemoration of the
Mexican War battle between American and Mexican
troops in 1847. The name may have been
suggested by John S. Williams, an officer
in the Mexican War who was known locally as
Cerro Gordo Williams. Cerro Gordo (Fat
Hill) is a mountain pass between Varacruz and
Jalapa on the east cost of Mexico (Cerro Gordo
(Centennial; n. p.; Miller, Life and
Times of Cerro Gordo, 2; Piatt History of
Piatt County, 461). Post office
established Aug. 19, 1847.
