TREASURER OF SOVIET SOCIETY IS MURDERED
Erie Man is Killed with Hatchet; Robbery Seen as Motive
(Plain Dealer Special)
ERIE, Pa., April 5 - Herman MARTIUS, 40, treasurer of the Erie branch of the Friends of Soviet Russia, was found murdered in his store, 623 18th street, this afternoon.
Dan DUNDON, a parcel post carrier, who had been trying to deliver packages at the store for two days, discovered the back door open, stepped inside and saw MARTIUS body lying on the floor.  MARTIUS had been killed with a hatchet, which was lying beside the body.  The furniture was scattered about showing the room had been ransacked.
Police say robbery was the motive for the crime.  Robbers, believing MARTIUS may have had funds of the relief society in the stores, are thought to have attacked him while he was alone.  His wife and two children are visiting in Cleveland.
